Caspian International News Agency– Ilham Aliyev, the president of Azerbaijan, has appointed his wife as the vice-president.
Mehriban, Alieyev’s wife, started her job as the vice-president. The grounds for creating this post was provided in a referendum last September. Aliyev’s wife had been a legislator before, and had owned a charity foundation.
Depending on the energy resources and his strong coalitions with the west, Aliyev has kept his distance from Russia’s influence in Caspian sea region. However, his government has been accused of human rights violation and punishment of the opposition.
Aliyev’s opponents believe that the amendment of the constitution, which caused the creation of the post of vice-president, and increased the presidency term from 5 to 7 years, will put Azerbaijan in the path of accepting a monarchy.
